Boothroyd signals intent

New Coventry manager Aidy Boothroyd has wasted little time assembling a squad he feels will be capable of upsetting Championship betting odds by challenging for promotion this season. Boothroyd has made five signings so far this summer.
Gary McSheffrey, Stephan O’Halloran, Roy O’Donovan, Richard Keogh and Lee Carsley have all been brought to the Ricoh Arena. The signing of McSheffrey has got the fans most excited.
The Coventry born forward returns to the club four years after Birmingham signed him for £4million. McSheffrey endured a frustrating few years at St Andrews and was sent to Leeds on loan last season. It’s at his boyhood team where McSheffrey has played the best football so far in his career. The Coventry fans will be hoping they see the same player who scored nearly 50 goals in his 150 game first spell. If they do, Carling Cup betting might be favouring Coventry to go on a run.
The other four summer signings all have an Irish connection. O’Donovan has signed from Sunderland. The former Coventry trainee scored 9 goals in 15 games whilst on loan at Hartlepool last season. O’Halloran has had a tough few years at Aston Villa.
A number of serious injuries have restricted the defender to only a handful of appearances in the last two or three years. Richard Keogh was being chased by a few Championship clubs before choosing Coventry. The defender had been one of Carlisle’s best players over the past to seasons.
Lee Carsley was Boothroyd’s most recent signings. The former Everton and Birmingham midfielder is another player returning to Coventry. He played 50 games for the Sky Blues between 2000 and 2002. 36 year old Carsley will add a bit of bit in the middle of the park. He will also bring leadership to the squad, which will be essential if Coventry are to return to the promised land.
