Ronaldo hits brace

Cristiano Ronaldo was back to something approaching the form of last season with both goals as Manchester United beat West Ham 2-0 at Old Trafford. Nani also started for the Red Devils, who are in 6th place in the Premiership having played a game less than the teams above them.

Elsewhere, Ricardo Carvalho again picked up an injury in Chelsea’s 3-0 victory at Hull City. The Portuguese defender started, and lasted the full ninety minutes, but looked uncomfortable at the end as goals from Frank Lampard, Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda gave Luiz Felipe Scolari’s men the points. Jose Bosingwa and Deco were also in Scolari’s starting line-up.

Disappointment all round

Ricardo Costa was not selected on his first match back from suspension in the Bundesliga, and the Portuguese watched from the bench as his Wolfsburg side were 3-0 winners over Borussia Monchengladbach on Tuesday. On the same night, Hugo Almeida played the full ninety minutes but could not prevent Werder Bremen from a 2-0 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, with both goals coming in the last twenty minutes.

It was a bad night for the Portuguese contingent in action in Germany on Wednesday. Daniel Fernandes was in goal as VFL Bochum were beaten 3-1 at home by high-flying Hoffenheim, while Armando Petit was also on the losing side in Cologne’s 1-0 home defeat to Borussia Dortmund, and Sergio Pinto was subbed as Hannover suffered a 3-0 reverse at Hertha Berlin.

Zenit St. Petersburg are in 5th place in the Russian Premier League with four matches remaining, following a frustrating 2-2 home draw with FC Saturn of Moscow. Danny played in midfield for Zenit, who after winning the league last season, are hoping for a slip-up from the teams above them in the remaining four games to qualify for next season’s Uefa Cup.
