BEIJING (SW) - The United States have won their third Golden Medal at the Olympic Women's football tournament, beating Brazil after extra time in the final.
Neither side managed to break the deadlock in regular time and an additional half hour was needed to decide the clash.
Six minutes into extra time, it was 26-year-old Carli Lloyd to put the ball past Brazil goalkeeper Barbara for 1-0.
The Brazilians, who after the men's elimination were their nation's only hope for its first Olympic Gold ever, lacked the flexibility to fight their way back into the game.
The US had already won the 1996 and 2004 tournaments. Only Norway have been able to break through that dominance in 2000.
